Hydrogen storage: as simple as AB
Wednesday, June 25, 2008
"Going back to rather basic A-level exam chemistry AB (ammonia borane) is a white powder which, when heated, gives off hydrogen. AB also stores more hydrogen by volume than even liquid H2. Using AB would also mean that swathes of electricity would not be needed to produce the hydrogen from water." More

Honda makes first hydrogen cars
Monday, June 16, 2008
"Japanese car manufacturer Honda has begun the first commercial production of a zero-emission, hydrogen fuel-cell powered vehicle. The four-seater, called FCX Clarity, runs on hydrogen and electricity, and emits water vapour. Honda claims the vehicle offers three times better fuel efficiency than a traditional, petrol-powered car. Honda plans to produce 200 of the cars, which are initially available only to lease, over the next three years." More

Wales rolls out first carbon free minibus
Friday, June 06, 2008
"A carbon free and silent minibus powered by three different green technologies - the first of its kind in Europe - was officially launched in Wales today on World Environment Day. The clean, green emission free tribrid bus is the result of an international collaboration, led and co-ordinated in Wales by the University of Glamorgan with funding from the Energy Savings Trust, sponsorship from the Welsh Assembly Government and the support of industry. The bus was launched and put through its paces for the first time at an Energy Savings Trust event to mark the successful completion of the project." More

Hydrogen, and fuel cells occupy centre stage at fair
"Efficient and secure energy supplies were at the top of the agenda at the trade show Energy, under the umbrella of the Hanover Fair, this year. The line-up included the world's largest group presentation of hydrogen and fuel-cell technology and boasted a record 160 exhibitors from 25 countries. Professor Birgit Scheppat, of the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences, said at the show: "Hydrogen and fuel cells are complementary technologies, which are necessary in order to develop climate-friendly and efficient power and heat systems ready for widespread application in the marketplace."" Europe gears up for fuel cells, hydrogen tech spending
"According to an Associated Press report, European governments agreed last week to spend $731 million for the development of fuel cells and hydrogen technology for cars that could trim down oil use and carbon dioxide emissions within decades. Automakers and energy firms such as Daimler AG and Royal Dutch Shell PLC are expected to match or exceed the EU funding for the six-year research project that should speed up research and make cleaner cars a commercial reality between 2010 and 2020." Air Force officials look at hydrogen as potential fuel source
Wednesday, June 04, 2008
"Few car owners would ever think of pouring water down the gas tank; however, as Air Force officials here continue initiatives to redefine the Air Force's energy culture, more Airmen might picture water as an energy source. Some Robins Air Force Base Airmen may be among the first to see the use of hydrogen-power in their daily lives, after the recent addition of a Quantum HyHauler Plus and a hydrogen-powered forklift. Robins AFB officials received the HyHauler Plus through a partnership with the Army National Automotive Center and the Air Force's Advanced Power Technology Office, which is based here." More

Shell station in LA to offer hydrogen
"Shell is preparing to open a fueling station in west Los Angeles later this month that will dispense gasoline or, for the right car, hydrogen. Duncan Macleod, vice president of Shell Hydrogen, gave the keynote talk on Tuesday at the CTSI Clean Technology conference, where he said that the Santa Monica Boulevard station will be followed by a few more in the coming months. The Los Angeles station will use an electrolyzer to manufacture hydrogen from electricity on site." More

Ronn Motor shows off gas and hydrogen powered sports car
"The Scorpion burns a mix of gasoline and hydrogen in its combustion engine. Regular tap water is split into hydrogen with electricity from two batteries that are charged by an oversized alternator. The hydrogen is produced by the G3 unit of Hydrorunner;, which makes on-demand hydrogen system available for retrofit into existing cars. A dual-processor computer will manage the flow and ratio of hydrogen, keeping the fuel at around 30-40 percent hydrogen, Ronn says." More

EU Backs US$1.5 Billion Research Program to Develop Hydrogen Cars
"The European Union approved a 940 million-euro ($1.5 billion) research initiative to spur the development of hydrogen-powered cars, seeking to reduce air pollution and reliance on imported oil. The program is due to be 50 percent financed by companies including Royal Dutch Shell Plc and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG and 50 percent funded by the EU over six years. Hydrogen produces no pollutants such as carbon dioxide when used as fuel in combustion engines or fuel-cell systems, helping Europe cut emissions and diversify energy supplies. The program, endorsed by EU research ministers today in Brussels, aims to accelerate the commercialization of hydrogen and fuel-cell technologies, allowing "commercial takeoff" between 2010 and 2020. Existing market barriers include the cost and durability of fuel cells, the sustainable production of hydrogen and the safe distribution and storage of hydrogen." More

Hydrogen fuel plant for Asco and Buchan
"ASCO and Buchan CHP, the company behind plans to build a multi-million-pound green energy plant in Peterhead, have joined forces to develop proposals for one of the first hydrogen fuel production plants in Scotland. The renewable energy development, which would be centred on Buchan CHP's proposed residual waste-to-energy plant, follows a recent announcement about the company's plans for the first dedicated oilseed rape commercial-scale biodiesel plant in Scotland at Peterhead. The plans would see the creation of a hydrogen production plant which would be powered from the energy produced by using the region's residual, non-hazardous waste as a fuel source." More
